This will be a collection of stories from members of our church from the past and present. We hope you'll be encouraged by the testimonies of others as they share about the faithfulness of God!
Bill and I began attending Whittington in the early 1990’s. We recommitted our lives and marriage to the Lord. We taught many Sunday School classes together. One of our favorite classes was with personal flash cards from Walk thru the Bible ministries. The books of the Bible were depicted with crazy cartoonish pictures that would help you remember the book as wells as a keyword On the back of the card was a brief overview of the book. We also devised ways to help memorize the books in order. Gelnd was said gee land and stood for Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The crazier the better! We played games in the adult classes. We did this class many times and were usually in a house that stood where the Helps building stands today.
The ministerial staff was always willing to be supportive in our choices of materials.
Mark and Pam's children share some of their favorite memories through their parents' years of ministry.
This is a well-known story around Whittington! Watch to see how a broken down bus full of students impacted our church for years to come.
The Minor family has many examples of how the church became their family through the years of ministry. We know many others share similar experiences where the church stepped up to love them in tangible ways!
One year's Colorado ski trip was particularly eventful. As a young adult, I was particularly immature (and still am, by the way) and I enjoyed pranks and childish behavior even as a 20 something. One night, as I was entering the pool area in our condo, I caught a glimpse of one of our groups in one of the many hot-tubs. So, I ran full speed and leaped into the center and splashed every person quite nicely with a cannon-ball that I am still proud of. As I came up out of the water, and looked around the circle of quite a few folks I had just drenched.... I didn’t recognize a single face!! I had jumped into the wrong tub and soaked a group of complete strangers...ugh!
Later on that trip, we were staying with some good friends that had 2 young boys. One of the boys had an inner ear infection on the trip up and unfortunately as you go up in the mountains, it pressurizes your eardrums. We all awoke at 3am one morning with this boy absolutely squalling, and it
turned out the pressure had stuck in his inner-ear and caused level 10 pain. I felt so bad for him, and it wasn’t long before it was “off to the ER” at 3am - a theme I was all too familiar with!
And then to top this trip off, I had an incident while skiing. Now, I had skied for years prior and was fairly decent and tended to go fairly fast. Especially when encouraged by a tall skinny gentlemen who bore a resemblance to a 6 foot tall walking stick, but I digress! In any event, one morning I had stuffed granola and candy bars in various parts of my ski suit. This was required for us “high octane” ski dudes as we never stopped to eat, so we would eat “on the lift” so to speak. I had placed a fairly large Snickers bar in
my front right pocket. However, when the Snickers bar is subjected to near zero temperatures, it becomes a brick! So as luck would have it, on this very first day of skiing, a beginner tripped me off the ski lift and I fell directly onto my chest, and my tasty chocolate treat became a rib-breaking brick in an instant. Oh, that hurt! As x-rays would later confirm, I did indeed break a rib! Needless to say, I skied quite carefully the rest of the trip!
